What Is Exit and Emergency Lighting Testing?

Exit and emergency lighting testing confirms that every illuminated exit sign and battery-backed emergency fixture in a building will actually work when normal power fails. It covers the monthly 30-second functional test and the annual 90-minute full-duration discharge test that NFPA 101 requires, plus the fixture, wiring, and battery inspection that keeps a system passing both. TechLink runs this on a recurring schedule across every site in a portfolio, not just the flagship location.

  • This covers:
  • Illuminated exit signage
  • Battery-backed emergency fixtures
  • Photoluminescent egress markings
  • Monthly and annual test documentation

What’s Included in Every Testing Program

Testing

90-minute annual and 30-second monthly push-button function testing of all emergency and exit lights.

Inspection

Fixture inspection for housing damage, wiring, and battery terminals.

Repair

On-site repairs include electrical connections, battery and ballast replacement. Fixture  and additional electrical repairs are completed as needed.

Assessments

Interior and exterior lighting condition inspections are available.

Reporting

Completion and submission of inspection forms, with a copy logged to the SIMPL portal.

Standardization

Standardized testing for consistent documentation across every site.

Nationwide Exit and Emergency Lighting Testing Services

TechLink manages exit and emergency lighting testing, inspection, and repair for companies coordinating dozens to hundreds of sites at once, under one project team instead of a different local vendor at every address. See how that same coordination played out on the electrical side of a rollout in this case study, or browse electrical installation services.

How Does Exit Lighting Testing Work Across Multiple Locations?

Every site follows the same sequence, so a fire marshal sees the same standard of documentation whether it’s site one or site four hundred:

  • Site survey of egress paths, fixture condition, and emergency circuit capacity
  • Fixture and battery backup selection against the code that governs that site
  • Wiring and mounting, tied into the building’s emergency circuit
  • Initial 90-minute full-duration discharge test and sign-off documentation
  • Enrollment in a recurring monthly and annual testing schedule
  • Photo documentation and test records logged to the SIMPL portal

What Exit Lighting Does TechLink Install and Test?

Deployment Types

Each fixture type is installed and tested against the specific code or listing that governs it, not just mounted and left.

Emergency Egress Lighting

NFPA 101

Path-of-travel fixtures sized to keep egress routes lit to at least 1 foot-candle on average, with no more than a 40 to 1 uniformity ratio between the brightest and dimmest point.

Illuminated Exit Signage

UL 924

Internally or externally lit exit signs, listed to stay legible at their rated viewing distance for a full 90 minutes after power drops.

Battery Backup & Inverter Units

90-Minute Rating

Battery and inverter packs rated to hold emergency circuits through a full annual discharge test.

Photoluminescent Egress Markings

UL 924 Listed

A non-electrical alternative accepted where the sign is continually illuminated by at least 5 foot-candles of ambient light during occupancy, never a light on a timer, motion sensor, or switch.

The Testing Cycle Every Site Follows

Monthly30-second push-to-test functional check of every emergency fixture, logged by site.
Annually90-minute full-duration discharge test under NFPA 101, documented and dated.
OngoingFixture and battery replacement flagged automatically as units age out of rating.

Why Exit Lighting Runs on Its Own Testing Clock

Most of what TechLink installs gets tested once, at sign-off, and then runs until something breaks. Exit and emergency lighting doesn’t get that pass. NFPA 101 puts every fixture on a recurring schedule for the life of the building: a 30-second push-to-test check every 30 days, and a full 90-minute discharge test every year, both dated and on record. Path-of-travel lighting has to hold at least 1 foot-candle on average along the egress route, with no more than a 40 to 1 uniformity ratio between the brightest and dimmest point, and every exit sign has to carry a UL 924 listing that verifies it stays legible for the full 90 minutes after power drops.

Photoluminescent signage is the one way around a hardwired circuit, and it still has to be UL 924 listed and continually illuminated by at least 5 foot-candles of ambient light while the building is occupied, never a light on a timer, motion sensor, or switch. That rules it out for any space that goes dark while occupied. TechLink tracks which standard applies to which fixture, at which site, so a facilities team is never guessing at the day a test is due.

How Do You Track Exit Lighting Compliance at Scale?

  • TechLink logs every test in the SIMPL platform, so a fire marshal's request for records is a report, not a scramble:
  • RMonthly and annual test dates by site and fixture
  • RPhoto documentation of every test and repair
  • RBattery and fixture age tracked toward replacement
  • RCompliance and audit logs available on demand

Frequently Asked Questions About Exit Lighting Testing

O
P
How often does exit lighting have to be tested?
NFPA 101 requires a 30-second push-to-test functional check every 30 days and a full 90-minute discharge test once a year, both documented with the test date and result.
O
P
Who is responsible for keeping test records?
The building owner or facilities team, though TechLink logs every test in the SIMPL portal so records are available on request rather than reconstructed after the fact.
O
P
Can photoluminescent signage replace electrically powered exit signs?
Yes, where it carries a UL 924 listing and stays continually illuminated by at least 5 foot-candles of ambient light while the building is occupied, a source that can't be on a timer, motion sensor, or switch. That rules it out for any space that goes dark while occupied, and local AHJ approval still applies.
O
P
What happens if a fixture fails its monthly test?
Technicians carry stocked batteries, ballasts, and common replacement parts on their vehicles, so most repairs are completed the same visit instead of requiring a return trip.
O
P
Does TechLink handle multi-site testing schedules?
Yes. Sites are enrolled in a recurring monthly and annual schedule, with technician dispatch coordinated through one project team instead of a different local vendor at every address.
O
P
How long does it take to bring a portfolio onto one testing schedule?
Timelines depend on site count and current fixture condition, but an initial site survey establishes where every location stands, and sites move onto the recurring monthly and annual cadence from there, visible in the SIMPL portal throughout.
